Core Learning (including immersive simulation)

All trainees must complete a minimum 30 hours of core mandatory learning or can consist of the total 60 hours required (formal foundation delivered education programme) this must be evidenced in your Turas portfolio prior to the ARCP deadline - ARCP requirements page  The formal foundation delivered education is curriculum based, specific and available to all trainee within the LEP/foundation school and can be delivered in face-to-face sessions (may be specified online interactive sessions).

Core learning can also include:

  • Formal foundation delivered education programme
  • Simulation training specific for foundation trainees,
  • Other ‘core’ topics specified by the curriculum
  • Prescribing training
  • eLearning modules specified by the LEP/foundation school. No limit on amount.

Please note: You do not need to use Turas Study Leave app for your foundation delivered education programme (core learning), if you are attending foundation simulation training, ILS, ALS or tasters you must requested via the study leave app on Turas.

Click here for instructions on how to apply via Turas Study Leave app

What is simulation?

Simulation is a method or technique to produce an experience without going through the real event. It can be done for the purpose of training, assessment or research. Other than the courses provided by the resuscitation council, which have an element of assessment, all of the rest of the simulation you will experience in F1 and F2 are for training purposes only.

Simulation contributes to your ‘core’ learning hours every event is directly mapped to the foundation curriculum FPCs.  It is therefore recommended that you do your best to attend these sessions.

It is therefore recommended that you do your best to attend these sessions.

Immersive Simulation

Simulation is a technique, not a technology, to replace or amplify real experiences with guided experiences, often immersive in nature, that evoke or replace substantial aspects of the real world in a fly interactive fashion.  "Immersive" conveys the sense that participants have of being immerse in a task or setting as if they would in the real world"

Simulation can be done for the purposes of training, assessment or research.  In Foundation in Scotland, all simulation will experience, expect those delivered by the Resuscitation Council, which have elements of assessment, are for training only.   To view the Framework please open here

To view the Video "Introduction to Immersive SIM" By Dr Jemma Pringle click here. To learn more about what a simulation centre like and how immersive simulation runs.

Foundation Simulation in Scotland can include:

  • Mental health SIM - mental health problems commonly encountered by F1s in the general hospital wards (not just for those interested in psychiatry)
  • F2 Immersive Simulation half day
  • Medical and communication challenges commonly encountered by F2s

All of the simulation training you receive in foundation should be booked through your local Medical Education Centre - see below for the list of regional contacts.
