Dr Hamish Dougall, Specialty Doctor/GP in Cardiology, NHS Tayside SAS Project supported: BSCI Level 2 Coronary CT Angiography accreditation & BSE Transthoracic Scanning training
I have a split role, working as both a GP and also as a Specialty Doctor in Perth Royal Infirmary. In my Specialty Doctor role, I work in Cardiology seeing patients in General Cardiology Outpatient clinics, the Rapid Access Chest Pain Service, and Nuclear Cardiology service in Perth.
I identified two areas of training in non-invasive imaging that I wished to cover over a six month period. This was to help improve my knowledge, skills and experience to the benefit of the Cardiology service and patients, through working toward BSE accreditation in Transthoracic echocardiography and level 2 BSCI accreditation in coronary CT angiography.
Through the support of the SAS Development Fund, I am working towards achieving my goals, largely due to the fact the Programme was able to pay for me to take a short leave of absence from my GP post to focus on my training, and financially support the payment of my accreditation course costs.
As a result of undertaking the development opportunities, I am:
• Able to offer patients a wider range of personal knowledge, skills and experience when managing cardiology patients.
• Working towards enhancing the available echo skills within the department
• Working towards changing the follow-up and management of patient with valvular heart disease within our hospital
• Working towards developing and expanding the services offered to patients with regards to non-invasive imaging in the form of coronary CT angiography
All of above is contributing towards developing and improving services and better patient care in NHS Tayside.
