Less than full time training (LTFT) - Flexible Training

LTFT is available to all doctors in training, from any specialty, and each application will be reviewed and granted if it is deemed that there are ‘well founded reasons’ for continuing training less than full time. A priority will be applied to LTFT requests based on the reason given. Further details can be found on our Eligibility to Apply page.

Historically LTFT training has been open to trainees with caring responsibilities and those with medical conditions, but we understand there is a need for increased flexibility in postgraduate medical education to enhance wellbeing, job satisfaction and retention and so is a potential option for all trainees.

The aims of flexible training are:

  • To ensure continued and adequate training for those who cannot or do not wish to continue their training on a full- time basis.
  • To retain doctors within the medical workforce who are unable to continue their training on a full-time basis.
  • To maintain a balance between LTFT arrangements, educational requirements, and Service needs.
  • To promote career development and work/life balance for doctors training within NHS Scotland.

The principles of flexible training are:

  • All trainees, of all genders, are eligible to apply for LTFT training.
  • Applications may be made at any time during training.
  • LTFT training may be available to all grades of trainee (foundation, specialty, LAT) in all specialties, including FY1 and FY2.
  • Those wishing to train LTFT must show that training on a full-time basis would not be practical for them for well-founded individual reasons.

If you are considering whether to apply for LTFT and you would like to discuss the matter with a member of our team, please complete the contact us form and we’ll be happy to arrange an appointment for you.

Further details on LTFT training can be found on our main deanery page or by using the links in the menu on the left of your screen.
