Capacity building
SMERC builds educational research skills within Scotland, and invites leading international researchers to collaborate with SMERC project teams.
Our strategic activities include:
- Supporting medical students and trainees in developing skills and knowledge, via Summer Studentship Schemes, B Med Sci students, Academic Foundation Programme in Medical Education, Clinical Lecturers/Fellows and delivering teaching in research to Foundation Doctors. Many of our interns and Clinical Lecturers have gone onto posts in medical education and training, and have retained an active interest in carrying out and supervising educational research.
- PhD and MD student training and supervision. We currently have medical education PhD students under supervision across Scotland, seven of whom are supported by studentships secured from highly competitive external funding sources, including the only Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP) Fellow in the UK. This gives us the greatest capacity in the UK, and builds sustainability in terms of developing a breadth of understanding and knowledge of medical education research across Scotland.
