In order to receive maternity pay, you need to inform your employer ahead of your planned maternity leave. Your HR policy/ guidance from your lead employer should include an application form to complete which should be submitted with your MAT B1 form (which your midwife provides for you at your 20-week appointment).
Everyone who has given birth is legally required to take 2 weeks off after the baby is born, but most people choose to take longer than this. You can find information about your eligibility for maternity leave and maternity pay from your lead employer HR guidance.
Please consult your lead employer’s HR policy around this. The information around who your lead employer is can be found on the homepage of your Turas People account.
New fathers are entitled to up to 2 weeks statutory paternity leave. Shared parental leave should be discussed with your lead employer and supervisor.
Annual leave is usually accrued during maternity leave. Please check your lead employer HR policy around this.
This will be dependent on your training programme. We recommend you discuss this with your TPD, and specialty trainees may also find helpful information on their college website.
We recommend you discuss how your leave will affect your training programme with your Educational Supervisor / TPD.
You can still apply for a training programme whilst on parental leave, and you may choose to defer your start date. Once you have been offered a place on a training programme, you should discuss this with your TPD.
If you have specific questions about your pay, you should raise this with your lead employer’s HR department.
Most organisations (eg your defence union, BMA, Royal colleges) will reduce your subscription fee during your period of maternity leave.
