Responsible for maintaining and developing high quality medical education and training within their NHS Board Directors of Medical Education (DMEs) are consultants or doctors appointed to NHS Boards. Each DME works in close collaboration with the Postgraduate Deans. DME's are responsible for ensuring trainers and trainees employed by their NHS Board are fit for practice. Each DME also confirms their NHS Board delivers the standard of postgraduate medical education required by NES and the General Medical Council.
To meet the GMC Recognition of Trainers requirements named trainers are required to comply with the arrangements detailed in the Scottish Trainer Framework, - it is that all doctors who aspire to be trainers/teachers will work towards compliance, as in future only those who demonstrate compliance will be eligible to be appointed to “named trainer” roles.
