Following ARCP panels, trainees have the opportunity to request a review or appeal of certain ARCP outcomes. This would usually occur where the trainee disagrees with the outcome awarded by the ARCP panel and feels they have information & evidence which would demonstrate that a different outcome should have been awarded.
A brief summary of the circumstances in which a trainee can request a review or appeal is available below. Full details can be found in the Deanery Appeals Policy.
ARCP Reviews
Reviews can be requested for outcome 2 & 7.2. Reviews are undertaken by the original ARCP panel re-examining the evidence made available to them, as well as any additional information provided by the trainee, and considering whether the outcome given was correct. The trainee must request an appeal within 10 working days of receiving their ARCP outcome via Turas and a review panel would then, ideally, be convened within 15 working days of receiving the trainee request. The trainee will be advised of the outcome of the review in writing and can be invited to meet with a senior member of the review panel to discuss the outcome. The decision of the review panel is final, and the trainee has no further right to appeal.
ARCP Appeals
Appeals can be requested for outcome 3 & 4. When the Deanery appeals team receive a request for appeal for one of these outcomes the review process outlined above will be followed in the first instance. If the trainee disagrees with the outcome of the review panel (where the review panel upholds the award of the ARCP) they have the right to proceed to an appeal.
At this stage an appeals panel will be convened. This will be Chaired by a Postgraduate Dean with no previous connection to the trainee. Other members of the appeal panel will be confirmed in line with the provisions of Gold Guide 8. The appeal panel will consider all available evidence from the original ARCP, the review process & the trainee. The trainee will attend the panel and can present their information or have a representative present it on their behalf. The trainee can also bring an accompanying person to the appeal panel for support.
The Training Programme Director is likely to be involved in assisting the Deanery appeals team to compile an evidence pack for the panel ahead of the meeting. This evidence pack will be shared with the panel and the trainee. Further details of the content can be found in the Deanery Appeals Policy.
The decision of the appeal panel is final and the trainee has no further right of appeal.
