Overview of South-East Programme

Overview of Programme placements

Paediatric training is split into 2 levels across 7 years. Placements in SES will be as follows (assuming trainee is in full time training):

Level 1

ST1

6 months – Paediatric Acute Receiving Unit (PARU) in RHCYP, Little France, Edinburgh with peripheral weeks in the Children’s ward at St John’s Hospital, Livingston

6 months – Neonatal Unit in Simpsons Centre for Reproductive Health, Little France, Edinburgh 

 

ST2

8 months – PARU with subspecialty and HDU experience weeks, RHCYP, Edinburgh

4 months – NNU, Simpsons Centre for Reproductive Health

 

ST3

6 months – Registrar role in one of the district general hospitals: Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy; Borders General Hospital, Melrose; Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Larbert

6 months – Community Child Health and Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Trainees will either be based at one of the district general hospitals or in Edinburgh for this placement

 

ST4*

4 months – Registrar role in NNU, Simpsons Centre for Reproductive Medicine

4 months – Critical Care Unit, RHCYP, Edinburgh

4 months – Paediatric subspecialty, RHCYP, Edinburgh

Options include Respiratory/Cardiology; Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition; Endocrine/ Diabetes/Rheumatology; Neurology; Haematology/Oncology; Community Child Health/Neurodisability; Paediatric Emergency Medicine; Immunology and Infectious disease/Renal; Critical Care; Neonatology

 

*If Trainees are less than full time, placements will be 6 month rotations in NNU and CCU with the option of subspecialty experience before or after depending on trainee’s career plans e.g. applying for GRID. To discuss with their educational supervisor before ST4

 

Level 2

ST5 – ST7

GRID Subspecialty for 3 years:

Options include: Respiratory; PGHAN; Neurology; Endocrinology; Community Child Health; Neonatology; PEM; Allergy, Immunology and Infectious diseases; Paediatric Intensive Care; Haematology and Oncology

 

Non GRID trainees:

18 months: 6 month rotations in subspecialties as above.

18 months: 6 months rotations in the district general hospitals and PARU as registrars

Option to SPIN in a subspecialty for 1 year

 

Hospital Placements

Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Little France, Edinburgh
The main tertiary paediatric teaching hospital in SES.
Facilities: Cafe and charity shop on the ground floor serving sandwiches and light bites. M&S, WHSmith, hospital cafeteria and coffee shops in the adult hospital concourse.
Parking: Free on weekends and nights. Public buses from park and ride at Sheriffhall. Parking permits are available for the staff car park 2C, to apply see NHS Lothian Intranet.

Public Transport: Numerous bus links in and out of town. Lothian buses are the main operators. Edinburgh train station is a 30-40 minute bus ride, many options.

 

St John’s Hospital, Livingston

Children’s ward, 2nd floor.

Facilities: Cafeteria, WHSmith, Costcutter.

Parking: Officially staff car park permits required. There are non permit spaces at the back of the hospital, if space available.

Public transport: Livingston North Train station 20 minutes walk, numerous bus links.

Simpson’s Centre for Reproductive Health, Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, Little France, Edinburgh
Tertiary Neonatal unit
Facilities:  Main hospital canteen with a variety of hot and cold foods.
Also an M&S, WHSmith and coffee shops in the hospital concourse.
Parking: Free on weekends and nights. Public buses from park and ride at Sheriffhall. Parking permits are available for the staff car park 2C, to apply see NHS Lothian Intranet.

Public Transport: Numerous bus links in and out of town. Lothian buses are the main operators. Edinburgh train station is a 30-40 minute bus ride, many options.

Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, NHS Fife

Facilities: RVS Café, WH Smith, Costa Coffee and its own hospital canteen. There are free on-call rooms available for booking to stay in after nights/long days
Parking: Free, usually good availability

Public Transport: Kirkcaldy train station 15-20 minute walk away with direct trains from Edinburgh

Borders General Hospital, Melrose, NHS Borders
Facilities: An excellent cafeteria with famous scones
Parking: Free, limited availability at 0900

Public transport: Tweedbank train station is a 15 minute walk away with direct trains from Edinburgh

Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Larbert, NHS Forth Valley

Facilities: There is free accommodation (The Bungalow) available to book and stay in on the hospital grounds for nightshifts or long days. A number of trainees also stay in the Premier inn which is a ten minute walk away
They have excellent food facilities. There is a WH Smith, Starbucks, Costa Coffee and M&S on site as well as the hospital canteen.
Parking: Free with designated staff parking area

Public transport: Larbert train station is 15-20 minute walk away with direct trains from Edinburgh
