On-calls on the registrar rota are typically 24h, or 48h at the weekend, with a rest day the following day.  Some out of hours shifts are covered by Advanced Birth Practitioners.

The main site is Borders General Hospital. Peripheral clinics held in Berwick, Hawick, Eyemouth and Peebles.

What day of the week is departmental teaching?

While there is no set day, this is a department that is keen to teach with regular opportunities

How to get there.

The hospital is easily reachable in 45-60min by car from Edinburgh with the most direct route being via the A68.

There is also a regular train service between Edinburgh and Tweedbank station, which is a 20 minute walk away.

• Borders General Hospital is a small friendly unit, with an incredibly welcoming and supportive team.
• There are great training opportunities including ultrasound scanning, outpatient hysteroscopy and a wide range of out-patient clinics, making this an excellent unit to work in whilst preparing for MRCOG part 2 and part 3.
• Education is highly valued and trainees have regular opportunities to undertake medical student teaching.
• The morning handover meeting is attended by the whole medical team (Consultants, registrars, FY2s & GPSTs) and is highly educational, including discussion about interesting or challenging cases from out-patient or theatre settings.
• The rota differs to many other sites in that registrars do a 24h weekday or 48h on-call weekend shift, however, by nature of being a quieter unit, it usually to have opportunity to sleep overnight. Free accommodation is provided on site and there is free parking.
