Clinical Research Fellowships available - Medical Mycology

Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Mycology at The University of Exeter

Clinical Research Fellowship (1-year)

Application deadline: 26 February 2020

Start Date: 1 September 2020

The Centre

The Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Mycology (MRC CMM) at the University of Exeter is a world-leading research centre that is helping to tackle the major global threats to human health caused by fungal diseases. The MRC CMM is one of the most ambitious strategic investments in medical mycology and integrates researchers from multiple fields of expertise to increase our understanding of fungal pathogens and cognate immune defences, and to identify new ways to diagnose, prevent and treat fungal diseases.

Our mission is to facilitate pioneering cross-disciplinary research to substantially advance our understanding of life-threatening fungal infections. These advances will impact patient lives through improved prevention, diagnosis and treatments.

Job description

Two fellowships are available from the 1st September 2020 until the 31st August 2021.

The Fellow will be registered full time on our postgraduate MRes in Medical Mycology and Fungal Immunology, which is underpinned by structured taught courses to provide an extensive knowledge and skill-base in fungal infectious diseases, followed by a 24-week cross-disciplinary laboratory-based research project. Fellows will be strongly encouraged and supported to develop their pilot data into an application for a highly prestigious and competitive externally funded Clinical Research Training Fellowships.

We aim to appoint two Clinical Research Fellows with successful completion recognised by the award of a MRes degree in Medical Mycology & Fungal Immunology. Fellows will be assigned a mentor to provide independent support and advice during the Fellowship. Additional research and transferable skills training will be provided.

Funding and Eligibility

Candidates must have completed the foundation programme with a minimum of 24 months postgraduate clinical experience (successful completion of UK Medical or Dental Foundation Year 1 and 2 competencies) and be fully registered with the GMC or GDC at the time of appointment. We anticipate some candidates will have commenced specialty training (with a National Training Number) and are willing to consider applicants up to 1 year away from award of their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), we are unable to consider those in their final year. The SE candidate would need to apply for out of programme research which will allow them to step out of training for 12 months. This will need the agreement of the Training Programme Director (TPD) and / or Head of School, achieved using the formal application process via the deanery. Previous laboratory experience is not essential but applicants must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a clinical academic career.

This post is not on the current "shortage occupation" list and does not meet the minimum qualification requirements as issued by the Border and Immigration Agency therefore it will not qualify for a work permit. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider applications from candidates for this post who require a work permit to work in the UK.

The post holder could be employed in the university or the NHS depending on the individual’s circumstances. The post attracts a clinical salary based on a standard 40-hour week (£32,050 to £37,935) and a generous research budget including competitive funding for travel to conferences, workshops and MRes tuition fees.
