NHS Education for Scotland (NES) has responsibility for managing the allocation and distribution of Medical ACT funding to Health Boards. The funding amount made available is determined by the NES Board as part of its annual operational planning process. In practice, NES seeks to protect the Medical ACT budget as far as possible; therefore, NES provides an uplift in line with any uplift received from the Scottish Government, but the converse is also true, meaning that there is no Medical ACT uplift in years when NES receives no uplift.
