Trainer Information

Time out of Training (OOP)

Time out of training (OOP) can include research, experience, training and career breaks.

Taking time out of programme is governed by the Gold Guide produced by COPMED, the GMC and signed off by the four governments. Further information on Out of Programme is available on the GMC website.

There are a number of circumstances when a trainee may seek to spend some time out of the specialty training programme to which they have been appointed. Further information about Time Out of Programme (OOP) is available here.

Time out of programme is allowed during Foundation training. The application form can be accessed here

Generally, NES are supportive of OOP when there are sound educational reasons, however Programme Directors should take account of the effect on other trainees within the programme when giving advice and their support.
